Malaysia Day is annually held on September 16 to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation, which occurred on September 16 of 1963. Since 2010 Prime Minister Najib Razak has turned Malaysia Day into a public holiday and the celebrations are held at various points across the country.
The Malaysia Day Celebration is not the Independence Day, but rather a celebration honouring when Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore joined together to establish the new federation of Malaysia. In other words, Malaysia Day Celebration is Malaysia’s birthday and a food festival, as well as cultural performances can be found on this day.
